Afro-American pertaining to or characteristic of Americans of African ancestry. African Americans are many Americans of African descent use this term of identification. Many Federal and State agencies still use the descriptor "black" for this race group and it is the term that is used on the Census 2000 questionnaire. Many black people preferred to be called African-American or Afro-American. In the 60's the watchword for African Americans was Black Power. The meaning behind the term meant political, social and economic power for many disenfranchised African Americans.
